AOHNA recommends the following skills and qualifications for the position of occupational health nurse:

  • A member in good standing with the College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CARNA)
  • A member in good standing with the Alberta Occupational Health Nurses' Association
  • A graduate of an occupational health nursing program (diploma or certificate from a recognized University or College) OR is actively working towards completion of a certificate or diploma in occupational health nursing
  • A certificate in audiometric testing and spirometry testing from an approved training agency
  • Current Basic Life Support - Health Care Provider certification
  • Current International Trauma Life Support (Advanced First Aid) certification
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in an acute care setting

Beyond these qualifications, other training and education may be required depending on the workplace, the hazard profile and the requirements of the specific job. Common practice indicates that the majority of employers sponsor the membership and conference fees for their occupational health nursing staff.
